  1. the shoe has decent traction and weight. It stays clean and meets the physical demands of an off-road shoe for those with motion control. (I.E. no arch?)-see running store for further info on type of arch.

  2. I am a flat-footed runner and a severe over-pronator. I have spent a great deal of money and time trying to get the best shoes to suit my foot condition for distance running. I bought the Brooks Adrenaline ASR, because I needed to train off-road for my upcoming marathon. I was extremely happy with the Brooks Beast for road running, and the Adrenaline ASR was recommended as an off-road alternative to the Beast. Although most trial shoes are recommended as “motion control” shoes for over-pronators, because these shoes are so rigid and stable, I find they are mostly suited for runners with narrow, arched feet and not for flat footers. I think the Adrenaline ASR is the only shoe specifically for flat-footed runners with over-pronation problems.

The Adrenaline ASR shoes are extremely stable (although not as much as the Beast) and prevent the foot from rolling into the over-pronating position. I have used them for 6-8 miles on road and trials and I have had no shin splints at all. I have my doubts whether they would work for me on longer road distances like 15-20 miles, because in my opinion, the Adrenaline ASR shoes do not have the same construction as the Beast for these distances on the road. For example, my feet are completely flat, and the curvature of the last (bottom of the shoes, or the sole) in the Adrenaline ASR is not as straight (straight lasts are more suited for flat-footers than curved lasts) as in the Beast. Furthermore, the foot-bridge (which I believe is what prevents the excessive rolling for over-pronators) of the Adrenaline is not as pronounced as in the Beast. However, because the Beast is so heavy and rigid, I have started using these Adrenaline ASR shoes for my short road (8-10 miles) and track sessions (3-4 miles) as well.

In conclusion, if you are a flat-footed runner with severe over-pronation problems and want to run up 10 miles on the road and trails, the Adrenaline ASR would be my choice. It has excellent cushioning, the uppers are somewhat waterproof for light rain and moist trail conditions. The soles have a great grip for most surfaces on the trails and they are generally rigid enough to keep your foot stable and reduce excessive over-pronation. They are also lighter than most other trail shoes that I have tried, and they are certainly tailor-made for flat-footed or low-arched runners. Enjoy!
